Hadhrat Abu Talha (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that on one occasion Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) appeared before us while his mubaarak face was beaming with happiness. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) (explained the reason for his extreme happiness and pleasure) saying: Hadhrat Jibraeel (Alaihis Salaam) came to me and said: “Should I not mention to you something that will please you, O Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), (Allah Ta’ala says) that the one who recites durood upon you once, I send ten mercies upon him, and the one who recites salaam upon you once, I send ten blessings upon Him.
Adding ‘Salaam’ in the Durood
Hazrat Abu Sulaimaan Harraani (rahimahullah) says:
I once saw Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in a dream and he said to me, “O Abu Sulaimaan, when you copy Ahaadith and my name is mentioned, I notice that you suffice on ‘Salaat’ and you do not send ‘Salaam’ upon me. Salaam (i.e. Wasallam) is a four-letter word, and for every letter, one will receive a tenfold reward (amounting to forty additional rewards). Why then do you throw away forty rewards?” (Al-Qowlul Badee’ Pg. 488)
