When the Muhaajireen performed hijrah from Makkah Mukarramah to Madinah Munawwarah, they were forced to leave behind their homes, their wealth and everything they possessed, only for the pleasure of Allah Ta‘ala.
When they reached Madinah Munawwarah, they did not have any home or family which they could turn to for support. However, the people of Madinah Munawwarah welcomed them with open hearts and were prepared to sacrifice everything for them.
At that juncture, with the divine command of Allah Ta‘ala, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) created a pact of brotherhood between the Muhaajireen and Ansaar, in order to create a family for these Muhaajireen.
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) paired each Muhaajir Sahaabi with an Ansaari Sahaabi and told them that they will be brothers and family members to each other. Each one should support the other, and in the event of demise, one would inherit from the other. Later on, when the law of inheritance between family members was revealed, this law was changed.
The Ansaar showed great generosity to the Muhaajireen and were prepared to spend everything upon them. Hazrat Anas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that on one occasion, the Muhaajireen came to Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and said, “O Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), the Ansaar have taken all the rewards. They are such that at the time when they possess a lot, they are extremely generous, and when they possess a little, they share the little they have with others. They have fulfilled all our needs.”
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “No, (you will not lose out in the rewards) if you continue to make dua for them, and you are thankful to them (for their good) and you speak good of them before others (then you will also receive great rewards by Allah Ta‘ala).” (Sunan Abi Dawood #4812)
Below is a unique incident of how Hazrat Sa’d bin Rabee’ (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) showed outstanding generosity to his Muhaajir brother, Hazrat Abdur Rahmaan bin Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu):
After the pact was created, Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) addressed his Muhaajir brother, Hazrat Abdur Rahmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), and said to him, “O my brother! From the people of Madinah Munawwarah, I am among those who possess abundant wealth! (Since you are now my brother,) I give you the option of taking half of my wealth for yourself! I am married to two wives. I am prepared to divorce any one of them whom you are pleased to marry after seeing her. After she spends her iddah, then you may marry her.”
Despite Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) offering his brother, Hazrat Abdur Rahmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), half his wealth and one of his wives with a great amount of sincerity and love, he did not wish to accept anything from him. Instead, he made special dua for Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) saying, “Baarakallah fi ahlik wa maalik – May Allah Ta‘ala bless you with more barakah in your family and wealth! Just show me where the trade market is (so that I may engage in trade to earn a living).”
Hazrat Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) directed Hazrat Abdur Rahmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to the market, after which he went to the market and commenced trading in cheese and ghee. Allah Ta‘ala opened the way for him and his business thrived to such an extent that he acquired immense wealth and became among the wealthiest people of Madinah Munawwarah.
The extent of his wealth can be gauged by the fact that at the time of his demise, thirty-one years later, he left behind so many pieces of gold that the hands of the men who were breaking the gold pieces down with axes became blistered. From livestock, he left behind one thousand camels, one hundred horses and three hundred thousand goats. (Bidaayah wan Nihaayah 3/226-227 & Usdul Ghaabah 3/145, Fat-hul Baari 7/270)
