Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (rahimahullah) once mentioned the following:
One of the problems in today’s times is that many people instil in their children, from the very beginning of their lives, the importance of earning wealth, to such an extent that they become so preoccupied in this (i.e. school or university education) that there is no time left for them to study deen.
If their children are unable to study the basic kitaabs of deen, then at least they should have verbally educated them about their deeni obligations, but this also they do not do. Couldn’t they have taken out time to verbally educate the child regarding how to perform salaah and fulfil the other obligations of deen? In doing so, there is no real effort required from their side besides sacrificing a little time.
Had the parents possessed some concern for their children in their hearts, then they would have surely taught them the fundamental principles and necessary masaa’il of deen. However, this will only be possible when the parents have concern for deen and show importance to deen.
The main problem is that most people do not have any concern for deen anymore. The children present this excuse that our parents did not give us deeni education, and the parents justify to themselves, in their hearts, by thinking that their children do not have the time to learn deen, as they are preoccupied in their worldly education.
Why, my friends?! How is it that the children hear about and learn the necessary laws of the land? We have not seen a person who due to being preoccupied in studies, did not know the laws of the land, what is regarded as a crime by law, and which crimes will cause one to end up in jail.
I ask those who are responsible for the upbringing of these children, “When this child did not perform salaah, then why did you not reprimand him?” Will he have any answer for this?
In essence, the underlying problem is that most people no longer have any concern for deen. The outcome of this they will only realize when their eyes will close. They have left deen in such a way that they do not want to hear about deen, and if they are told about deen, then they have one hundred excuses.
