Performing Janaazah Salaah in a Musjid

• It is compulsory to perform the Janaazah Salaah out of the musjid. Performing the Janaazah Salaah in the musjid is impermissible (makrooh-e-tahrimi).

عن أبى هريرة قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: من صلى على جنازة فى المسجد فلا شىء له (سنن أبي داود، الرقم: ٣١٨٤)

Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said: “The one who performs Janaazah Salaah in the musjid will receive no reward.”

• The impermissibility of performing the Janaazah Salaah in the musjid applies to all the following situations:

1. The deceased as well as those performing the salaah are in the musjid.
2. The deceased is in the musjid and the people are out of the musjid.
3. The deceased is out of the musjid and the people are in the musjid.
4. The deceased and some people are out of the musjid and some people are in the musjid.

• It is impermissible to perform the Janaazah Salaah in the musjid. However, if there is a dire necessity to perform the Janaazah Salaah in the musjid e.g. in the event of rain, and there is no other place to perform the Janaazah Salaah except the musjid, then performing the Janaazah Salaah in the musjid will be permissible. However, in today’s times, since the masaajid have a sehn (demarcated area outside the musjid), there will be no need to take the janaazah into the musjid.^[1]

Note: The above-mentioned law (i.e. impermissibility of performing the Janaazah Salaah in the musjid) conforms to the Hanafi and Maaliki mazhab. According to the Shaafi’ and Hambali mazhab, performing Janaazah Salaah in the musjid is permissible.^[2]

قال العلامة ابن عابدين – رحمه الله -: إنما تكره في المسجد بلا عذر فإن كان فلا ومن الأعذار المطر (رد المحتار ٢/٢٢٦)

وصلاة الجنازة في المسجد الذي تقام فيه الجماعة مكروهة سواء كان الميت والقوم في المسجد أو كان الميت خارج المسجد والقوم في المسجد أو كان الإمام مع بعض القوم خارج المسجد والقوم الباقي في المسجد أو الميت في المسجد والإمام والقوم خارج المسجد هو المختار كذا في الخلاصة ولا تكره بعذر المطر ونحوه هكذا في الكافي (الفتاوى الهندية ١/١٦٥)
