Hazrat ‘Amr bin Maimoon (rahimahullah) once described the great caution of Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) when he would report Ahaadith from Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam).
He mentioned, “Once, while Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) began to report a Hadith from Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), he was overcome with such fear and worry that drops of perspiration were seen on his forehead.
After reporting the Hadith, he addressed the people and said, ‘This is what Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) mentioned or he mentioned something close to this.’” (Al Mustadrak #5374)
This was the high level of caution which Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) exercised when reporting the Mubaarak Ahaadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). He was overcome with fear and concern that he should not make a mistake while reporting from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), and he should not mistakenly attribute something to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) which he did not say.
The reason for his fear and concern was that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) mentioned in his Mubaarak Hadith, “The person who fabricates something and attributes it to me, then let him prepare his abode in the fire of Jahannum.” (Saheeh Bukhaari #107)
