Once, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) spent the entire night turning from side to side, being unable to sleep. His respected wife asked him, “O Rasul of Allah! It seems that you are unable to sleep tonight?”
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “A date was lying about, so I picked it up and ate it so that it does not go to waste. Now, I am concerned that it might have been from the wealth of sadaqah (charity).”
Note:
Most probably, the date was part of the wealth of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), but because the wealth of sadaqah would come to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) as well (for distribution), he could not sleep the entire night due to the doubt that the date might have been from sadaqah – Allah Ta‘ala forbid! – and in that case, he would have eaten something from the wealth of sadaqah.
This was the condition of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) – that due to a mere doubt, he was unable to sleep the entire night and thus turned from side to side. Now look at the condition of people today – how is it that those who claim to be the slaves of that very master (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), yet they indulge in usury, corruption, theft and every other type of haraam wealth without the least conscience!
