Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (rahimahullah) once mentioned the following:
In the path of progress towards Allah Ta‘ala, it is extremely important for one to ensure that no person is inconvenienced or hurt in any way through one’s words or actions. This is half of sulook (i.e. a great portion of the path of self-reformation revolves around huqooq-ul-ibaad – fulfilling people’s rights and not causing any pain to any person).
Ensuring that one does not cause any pain to people is not only a cause for one acquiring worldly benefit, but rather it is also a means for one acquiring blessings from the side of Allah Ta‘ala.
Benefiting the creation of Allah Ta‘ala is an act which will benefit one tremendously (in this world and the Hereafter). However, if one cannot bring benefit to people, then at the very least, one should ensure that one does not cause them any harm or pain.
