The Importance of Keeping a Record of Outstanding Debts

Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (rahimahullah) once mentioned the following:

Fulfilling the rights of people is extremely important. Therefore, one should keep a written record of all outstanding rights. Even if one owes a person just a single rupee – one should write it down and keep a record of it.

I have many files kept for record purposes, and each file is for a separate work. If I deal with anyone where I owe them anything or they owe me anything, then I immediately write it down in its relevant file.

One person mentioned to me, “In today’s times, there is a great need for people to keep written records of the dealings they have with others. Perhaps this need was not as great in previous times (as the people of the past were more honest in their dealings compared to today).”
