Hazrat Sa’eed bin Zaid (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) Defending the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum)

On one occasion, while Hazrat Mugheerah bin Shu’bah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was seated with some people in the Musjid of Kufah, Hazrat Sa’eed bin Zayd (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) entered the masjid. Hazrat Mugheerah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) greeted him and out of honour, he asked him to sit down on the raised platform in front of him.

After a little while, a person of Kufah entered the masjid and began to insult and speak ill of a certain person. Hazrat Sa’eed bin Zaid (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) asked Hazrat Mugheerah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), “Who is this man talking about?” Hazrat Mugheerah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, “He is insulting Ali bin Abi Taalib (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).”

Hazrat Sa’eed bin Zaid (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) became extremely angry and called Hazrat Mugheerah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) by his name thrice, “O Mugheerah bin Shu’bah! O Mugheerah bin Shu’bah! O Mugheerah bin Shu’bah!” He then said, “Why is it that I hear the companions of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) being insulted in your presence and you are remaining silent and not stopping the person? I testify that I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) mention a Hadith (in regard to his Sahaabah). I heard this Hadith with my own ears and my heart has preserved his words. I will not attribute any lie to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), on account of which I will be questioned by him when I meet him (on the day of Qiyaamah).”

Hazrat Sa’eed bin Zaid (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then mentioned, “I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) say, ‘Abu Bakr is in Jannah; Umar is in Jannah; Ali is in Jannah; Uthmaan is in Jannah; Talhah is in Jannah; Zubair is in Jannah; Abdur Rahmaan is in Jannah; Sa’d bin Maalik (i.e. Sa’d bin Abi Waqqaas) is in Jannah.’ Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then took the name of a ninth person and also gave him the glad tidings of Jannah, and if I want to take his name now, then I can do so.”

The Muslims who were gathered in the masjid of Kufah at that time begged him saying, “O companion of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), please inform us as to who is the ninth person.”

Hazrat Sa’eed bin Zaid (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, “Since you people have asked me in the name of Allah Ta’ala, I will inform you. I am the ninth person (who was given the glad tidings of Jannah by Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)) and the tenth person was Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) (i.e. in this gathering, Hazrat Abu Ubaidah was not present but he was present in another gathering when Rasulullah sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam gave the glad tiding of Jannah to ten Sahaabah including him).”

Hazrat Sa’eed bin Zaid (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then took an oath and addressed the people saying, “A single expedition, in which a Sahaabi participated with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), wherein his face got covered with dust, is greater and more virtuous (in the sight of Allah Ta’ala) than (all) the actions of any one of you (who is not a Sahaabi), even if you were to be granted the lifespan of Nooh (‘alaihis salaam) [and you spent your entire life doing good deeds].” (Musnad Ahmad #1629)

Tafseer of Surah Abas

He (the Prophet [sallallahu alaihi wasallam]) frowned and turned away because the blind man came to him! And what would make you know (O Muhammad [sallallahu alaihi wasallam] about the condition of the blind man?) Perhaps, (if you had attended to him,) he might acquire self-purification, or he might receive the advice, and the advice would have benefited him. As for the one who does not care (about imaan and deen), then you are giving him (more) attention, while there is no blame on you, if he does not attain self-purification.
