Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned:
Hazrat Umar (Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu) and many other Sahaabah (Radhiyallahu ‘Anhum) had acquired a lot of wealth during their lives. In fact, many Sahaabah (Radhiyallahu ‘Anhum) would receive a regular income. However, from the wealth they possessed, they would spend very little on their personal needs. Their food and clothing was extremely simple. In fact, they would lead lives of poverty. The reason for this was that despite them acquiring a good income, many of them would spend all their wealth in the path of Deen and even used to take loans for the upliftment of Deen (which they would pay off later on). In reality, the purpose of a believer acquiring wealth should be in order to use it for Deen and spend it in avenues pleasing to Allah Ta’ala.
