Sa’eed bin Khaalid Umawi (rahimahullah) was an extremely wealthy person, famously known for his generosity among the Arabs. It was his habit that whenever a poor person came to him for help, he would not hold back anything from the person, but would give him from whatever he had at that time.
However, if someone asked him for help at a time when he did not have anything, he would make a commitment in writing for the man to approach him when he was in better circumstances, or ask his heirs after his death.
Qais bin Sa’ad Khazraji (rahimahullah) Cancels the Debts of His Friends
Once, Qais bin Sa’ad Khazraji (rahimahullah) fell ill and none of his friends came to visit him. He was quite surprised, especially when he missed those people who used to frequent his house when he was in good health.
He asked his household the reason why nobody had come to visit him, and they said, “Almost everyone in the town owes you something, and in this condition, they feel embarrassed to visit you without paying off the debts they owe you.”
At this, Qais (rahimahullah) said, “May such wealth be cursed which even deprives a man of meeting his friends!” He then asked someone to go around the city and call out that Qais has forgiven all his debtors for the debts they owe to him.
After this announcement, the visitors came in such large numbers that there was always a crowd of people in his house.
