Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) Enquiring from the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) Regarding Their opinion About Two People
The Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) were once sitting with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) when a certain person passed by. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum), “What do you think of this person?”
The Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) responded by saying, “O Rasul of Allah! He is one of the noble people. By Allah, his status is such that if he proposes for the hand of a woman in marriage, then his proposal will be accepted. If he intercedes on a behalf of anyone, his intercession will be accepted.”
Hearing this, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) remained silent. Thereafter, another person passed by, and Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) the same question regarding him.
The Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) responded saying, “O Rasul of Allah! He is a poor person. If he proposes for the hand of any woman in marriage, his proposal will not be accepted. If he intercedes on anyone’s behalf, his intercession will not be accepted. If he speaks, then nobody will pay any attention to him.”
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then said, “This second person is far better than the entire world-full of the first person.”
Note:
The meaning of this Hadith is that merely having a good name among people holds absolutely no weight and value in the sight of Allah Ta‘ala. A poor, pious Muslim, who does not have a name among people, and whose words are not listened to by anybody, is better in the sight of Allah Ta‘ala than thousands of the so-called important people of the world, whose words are shown importance by people, and who people are prepared to obey and listen to – but in the sight of Allah Ta‘ala, they have no value or importance (as they are far from the path of Allah Ta‘ala).
It is solely through the blessing of the pious friends of Allah Ta‘ala that the world continues to exist. This is established through the Hadith which mentions that the day when there will be no person remaining to take the name of Allah Ta‘ala – that is when Qiyaamah will take place and the world will cease to exist. It is solely through the blessing of the pure name of Allah Ta‘ala that the systems of the world continue to function.
