Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) Assists a Poor Man to Get His Daughter Married

Once, a group of Qurraa (those who were experts in reciting the Qur’aan Majeed) from Basrah came to Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) and said to him, “There is a pious man living in our area, who often keeps fasts and performs abundant Tahajjud Salaah. He is so pious that each one of us envies him and wishes to be like him in performing ibaadat. He has given his daughter in marriage to his nephew, but due to poverty, he is unable to give his daughter the things she will require for her nikaah.”

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) took them to his house, and taking six bags of dinaars (gold coins) from a box, handed them over, asking them to take it to the pious man.

They were about to leave, when Hazrat Ibnu Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) said, “I don’t think it’s a fair way of helping him. If we give him the money, he will have a lot of difficulty in arranging all the things for his daughter’s nikaah, and much of his precious time will be wasted in buying things. His programme of ibaadat will then be disturbed. The wealth of the world is too worthless to distract the attention of a pious Muslim. It is not below our dignity for us to serve a Muslim brother. Let us make arrangements for the marriage, buy the items for the nikaah and give them to our neighbour.”

The Qurraa agreed to this, bought all the things required, and handed the items to the pious man.
