After Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) performed the nikaah of Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) told Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) to both wait for him at their home.
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) thereafter entered the home and asked for some water to be brought. When the water was given to him, he drank some of the water. Thereafter, he took some of the water into his blessed mouth, and then returned the water into the utensil. In this way, the water became blessed through the saliva of the greatest and most beloved servant of Allah Ta‘ala entering it.
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then handed the blessed water to Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) and instructed her to drink from it. After drinking the water, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) sprinkled some of the water on her forehead, head and chest, while reciting the following du‘aa:
اَللّٰهُمَّ أُعِيْذُهَا بِكَ وَذُرِّيَّتَهَا مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيْم
O Allah! I seek Your protection for her and her progeny from shaitaan, the rejected.
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then instructed her to turn around, after which he sprinkled some of the water between her shoulders while reciting the above du‘aa again.
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then asked for more water to be brought. When the water was brought, he drank some the water. Thereafter, he again took some of the water into his blessed mouth and then returned it into the utensil. He then gave the blessed water to Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to drink, after which he sprinkled some of it on his head and chest while reciting the following du‘aa:
اَللّٰهُمَّ أُعِيْذُهُ بِكَ وَذُرِّيَّتَهُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيْم
O Allah! I seek Your protection for him and his progeny from shaitaan, the rejected.
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then said to Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), “You may now live with your wife, with the name of Allah and with barakah.”
According to another narration, after sprinkling the water on Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) made the following du‘aa:
أَهْلُ بَيْتِيْ فَأَذْهِبْ عَنْهُمُ الرِّجْسَ وَطَهِّرْهُمْ تَطْهِيْرًا
O Allah! These are my household, so remove all impurities from them and purify them completely.
In the narration of Hazrat Buraidah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), it is reported that after sprinkling the water on Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) also made the following du‘aa for them:
اَللّٰهُمَّ بَارِكْ فِيْهِمَا وَبَارِكْ لَهُمَا فِيْ بِنَائِهِمَا
O Allah! Bless them and grant them blessing in their marriage.
In another narration, it is reported that after Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) sprinkled the water on Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), he said to her, “Know that I did not fall short in choosing the best person for you. I chose the one who is the most beloved to me from my family.”
Note: According to some narrations, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) first sprinkled the water on Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), and thereafter on Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha).
