Spending on the occasion of Tabook

gold barsHadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that on the occasion of Tabook, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) encouraged the Sahaabah (Radhiallahu Anhum) to spend in the path of Allah Ta’ala. It so happened that during those days, I was in possession of some wealth. I thus thought to myself that Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) always surpasses me in spending for the sake of Allah Ta’ala. If there is any occasion, that perhaps I will be able to surpass him, it will be this occasion. I thus went home, and with this intention, divided my entire property into half. I left one half for my family, and with the other I proceeded to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and presented the wealth before him. Hadhrat Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) addressed me saying:

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): “O Umar! Did you leave anything for your family?”

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu): “Yes, O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).”

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): “How much did you leave for them?”

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu): “I left half of my entire wealth.”

Subsequently, Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) came forward and presented his entire contribution to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) asked him,

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam): “What did you leave for your family, O Abu Bakr?”

Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu): “I have left Allah and his Rasul (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) for them.”

Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) thereafter says that on that day he realised the esteem rank and position of Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) and that he would never be able to surpass Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu). [1]
