A: If the debtor blankly denies owing the creditor and there is no way to retrieve the money, then zakaat will not be waajib upon the debt. However, if he is unable to pay it due to financial constraints and wishes respite, then zakaat will be waajib on the debt.

(فلا زكاة على مكاتب)…(ودين) كان (جحده المديون سنين) ولا بينة له عليه (ثم) صارت له بأن (أقر بعدها عند قوم) وقيده في مصرف الخانية بما إذا حلف عليه عند القاضي أما قبله فتجب لما مضى (وما أخذ مصادرة) أي ظلما (ثم وصل إليه بعد سنين) لعدم النمو والأصل فيه حديث علي لا زكاة في مال الضمار وهو ما لا يمكن الانتفاع به مع بقاء الملك (ولو كان الدين على مقر مليء أو) على (معسر أو مفلس) أي محكوم بإفلاسه (أو) على ( جاحد عليه بينة) وعن محمد لا زكاة وهو الصحيح ذكره ابن ملك وغيره لأن البينة قد لا تقبل (أو علم به قاض) سيجيء أن المفتى به عدم القضاء بعلم القاضي (فوصل إلى ملكه لزم زكاة ما مضى) وسنفصل الدين في زكاة المال (شامي 2/266)

A: Since the raw material was purchased with the intention of manufacturing products to be sold, zakaat will be waajib.

A: Zakaat is waajib upon the medication which the doctor administers to his patients or dispenses to them.

A: The zakaat will not be valid by merely offsetting the debt with the intention of Zakaat. However, if a person gives the debtor the money as zakaat and thereafter takes it back as a payment of his debt, Zakaat will be discharged.

واعلم أن أداء الدين عن الدين والعين عن العين وعن الدين يجوز وأداء الدين عن العين وعن دين سيقبض لا يجوز وحيلة الجواز أن يعطي مديونه الفقير زكاته ثم يأخذها عن دينه ولو امتنع المديون مد يده وأخذها لكونه ظفر بجنس حقه فإن مانعه رفعه للقاضي (شامي 2/271)

A: Since you have purchased the yarn with the intention of trade, zakaat is waajib on it. Zakaat will be paid upon the market value of the yarn at the time when discharging the zakaat. Similarly zakaat is waajib upon the market value of the byproducts of the yarn. Market value refers to the price which the consumer (i.e. the public) generally pays to obtain the item, irrespective whether the person was a manufacturer, retailer or wholesaler.
