Hazrat Moulana Inaamul Hasan Kaandhelwi (rahimahullah) once mentioned the following advice to a group of people. He said to them:
Tell me – why did Allah Ta‘ala create man? If Allah Ta‘ala created man just to eat and acquire wealth, then these actions are also carried out by animals, and if eating is a thing of honour and nobility, then a buffalo can eat more than a human being.
The honour and nobility of a person lies in him recognizing his Master and Creator and then striving to please Him. Such a person is worthy of being called a human being.
All other actions which man carries out are such that they are also carried out by animals. When man leads his life like an animal, then (in the sight of Allah Ta’ala), he becomes even worse than animals (as animals are fulfilling the purpose of their creation while man is not fulfilling the purpose of his creation).
This is an important point which you should ponder over.
(The second point is that) when man leaves out recognizing Allah Ta‘ala and believing in Him, and he does not lead his life in accordance to the commands of his Master and nor does he please Him, then as a result of this, man will certainly face hardships and difficulties in the world in the form of drought and famine, or floods (and other natural disasters).
All these natural disasters that occur in the world do not happen for no reason. Man’s actions are directly linked to man’s worldly condition.
All the inventions that exist in the world today are such that they were not found in the past. However, despite this, the difficulties and problems in the world are still increasing.
I will tell you the reason why all this is happening in the world. Through eating good food and building a good home, man does not become good (and progress in the sight of Allah Ta‘ala). Rather, man becomes good through him improving his internal self and reforming the qualities and values in his life.
When man’s heart will become reformed and good then his entire life will become good, and when man’s heart will become corrupt, then his entire life will become corrupt.
New inventions are coming about in the world through man making an effort on the material things of the world, but man himself is retrogressing and becoming corrupt (in his values, actions and character).
Now, if man continues to neglect reforming his actions, then no matter how many new inventions will come about in the world, man will continue to retrogress and remain in difficulties and problems (on account of him neglecting the effort which he needs to make on himself).
If a person makes effort upon himself and becomes a true servant and a good human being (through him imbibing good values and morals within himself), then even if he has little possessions of the world, his life will be made and he will be a happy and content person in life.
