Hazrat Abu Muslim Khowlaani (rahimahullah) mentions:
“I entered the masjid of Hims and noticed a gathering of people. Among them there were thirty-two companions of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) present who were narrating Ahaadith from Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam).
In this gathering, there was a young man, whose eyes had surma applied to them and whose teeth were bright. He was seated with a shawl wrapped around him. Whenever the people of this gathering differed on any matter, they referred the matter to him, and they accepted his word as final.”
In some narrations, it is mentioned that Abu Muslim (rahimahullah) asked those around him, “Who is this young man?” They replied, “He is Mu’aaz bin Jabal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).”
Hazrat Abu Muslim Khowlaani (rahimahullah) continues:
“Early the next morning, I proceeded to the masjid and found Mu’aaz (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) performing salaah close to a pillar. I commenced my salaah near him and when he completed his salaah with salaam, I sat so close to him that the only thing between us was a pillar. We sat for a little while in silence until I faced him and said, ‘O Mu’aaz! I take an oath in the name of Allah, I have love for you in my heart. My love for you is not based on the hope of acquiring any worldly profit or gain from you, nor is it based on any family bond and relationship between us.’
Hazrat Mu’aaz bin Jabal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) asked, ‘Why do you have love for me in your heart?’ I replied, ‘The love I have in my heart for you is solely for the sake of Allah Ta’ala.’ Hazrat Muaaz (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, Is this the only reason (for you having love for me in your heart), I said, ‘Yes, by the qasm of Allah (this is the only reason).’ Again he asked me, “By Allah, is this the only reason (for you having love for me in your heart). I said, ‘Yes, by the qasm of Allah (this is the only reason).’
Hazrat Mu’aaz (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then mentioned to me, ‘If this is the only reason for you having love for me in your heart, then accept glad tidings; for I have heard Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) mentioning the words of Allah Ta’ala, “Allah Ta’ala says, ‘My love becomes compulsory for the two people who love each other only for My sake, they spend time sitting with each other only for My sake, they visit each other only for My sake and they spend wealth on each other only for My sake (i.e. Allah Ta’ala says that He will definitely love them and be pleased with them). (On the day of Qiyaamah,) they will have pulpits of Nur (light), they will enjoy the shade of the Arsh of Allah Ta’ala and they will be envied by even the Ambiyaa (alaihimus salaam) and the Siddeeqeen (Musnad Ahmad #22276 & 22030)
Note: Though the Ambiyaa and Siddeeqeen will be far higher in rank and reward, they (the Ambiyaa and Siddeeqeen) will express happiness over the great reward which Allah Ta’ala will grant these people for loving each other solely for His sake in the world.’”
