Duas to be Recited when Performing Sa’ee

Dua One

Hazrat Jaabir (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that when Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) came close to Safaa, he recited the following verse of the Quraan Majeed:

“Indeed, Safaa and Marwah are from the salient symbols of Allah.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) then said:

“I will commence (performing the sa’ee) with that which Allah commenced with (i.e. Allah mentioned Safaa first in the verse, so I will commence the sa’ee from Safaa).”

Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) ascended Safaa and stood at a point where he could see the Ka’bah Shareef, and then he continued to recite the takbeer, the tahmeed and engage in dua for a lengthy period.

Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) also recited the following thrice:

“There is none worthy of worship besides Allah, who is alone and has no partner. To Him alone belongs the kingdom, and to Him alone belongs all praise, and He has complete power over everything. There is none worthy of worship besides Allah, who is alone. He fulfilled His promise, and assisted His slave, and He alone defeated the groups (and armies of the disbelievers).”

On coming to Marwah, Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) carried out the same actions which he did on Safaa (ascending until he could see the Ka’bah Shareef, facing the qiblah, engaging in dua, reciting the abovementioned zikr, etc.). (Saheeh Muslim #1218)

Dua Two

Imaam Naafi (rahimahullah), the freed slave of Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (radhiyallahu anhuma) reports:

When Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (radhiyallahu anhuma) performed sa’ee between Safaa and Marwah, he commenced the sa’ee from Safaa. He ascended Safaa until the Ka’bah Shareef could be seen and then recited the takbeer thrice. Thereafter, he recited the following zikr (and praise of Allah Ta’ala) once:

There is none worthy of worship besides Allah, who is Alone and has no partner. To Him alone belongs the kingdom, and to Him alone belongs all praise. He gives life and death, and He has complete power over everything.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (radhiyallahu anhuma) did this seven times. Hence, (in total,) he recited the takbeer twenty-one times and recited this zikr seven times. He also engaged in dua in between, presenting his needs before Allah Ta’ala.

On coming to Marwah, Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (radhiyallahu anhuma) ascended it and carried out the same actions which he had carried out on Safaa, repeating them seven times (i.e. he recited the takbeer twenty-one times and the zikr seven times in total, while making dua in between). He continued in this manner until he completed the sa’ee.

Imaam Naafi (rahimahullah) mentions:

When he ascended Safaa, I heard him make the following dua:

“O Allah! Indeed, You have mentioned (in the Quraan Majeed), ‘Call out to Me in dua, and I will respond to your call,’ and certainly You do not break Your promise! Indeed, I beg You, that just as You guided me to Islam – do not take Islam away from me, (and keep me upon imaan) until You take my life in the condition that I am a Muslim!”

(Muatta Imaam Muhammad #474)

Dua Three

Hazrat Masrooq (rahimahullah) reports that when Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu anhu) descended from Safaa, he commenced walking until he came to the valley (today marked with green lights). He then began to jog while reciting the following:

O my Rabb! Forgive (me) and shower Your mercy (upon me), indeed You alone are the Most Honoured and Most Noble! (Ad-duaa lit Tabraani #870)
