Do Not Make Your Deen a Pastime and Amusement

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once recited the following verse of the Qur’aan Majeed in which Allah Ta‘ala mentioned the condition of the disbelievers who have taken their religion as a pastime and amusement. Allah Ta‘ala says:

الَّذِیۡنَ اتَّخَذُوۡا دِیۡنَهُمۡ لَهْوًا وَّلَعِبًا

Those (the kuffaar) who have made their religion an amusement and play… (Surah A’raaf v. 51)

After reciting the above verse, Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahimahullah) addressed the people saying:

Engaging in the effort of deen without the correct intention, or for any other motive besides upholding and fulfilling the command of Allah Ta‘ala and to acquire His pleasure and the rewards of the Hereafter will ultimately (enter under the purport of this verse and) be regarded as taking one’s deen as an amusement and play (and this is the way of the kuffaar which we have been prohibited from emulating in this verse).
