Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Auf’s (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) Fear of Accountability

Naufal bin Iyaas al Huzali (rahimahullah) narrates:

‘We would sit in the company of Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), and what a wonderful companion he was. One day, he took us to his home for a meal. When we sat down for the meal and the plate of food containing meat and bread was presented before us, he began to cry.

We asked him, “What causes you to cry O Abu Muhammad?” He replied, “The reason for me crying is that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) left this world in the condition that neither he nor his family had eaten barley bread to their fill (during his lifetime). I fear that it should not be such that we are being kept behind (in the world to enjoy these bounties) and in lieu of this, we will be deprived of the bounties of the Hereafter.” (Isaabah 4/292)
