Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) Not Willing to Undergo an Eye Operation due to it Affecting His Salaah

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) suffered from a condition of the eye which caused it to water continously. A doctor advised him saying, “Treatment is possible if you are willing to take precautions by making sajdah on a raised wooden plank for five days, rather than upon the bare ground.”

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) replied, “I am not prepared for this. I will not perform a single rakaat in this manner. I have heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) saying, ‘A person who intentionally leaves out a single Salaah, he will meet Allah on the Day of Qiyaamah in the condition that Allah will be displeased with him.’”

Hazrat Sheikh Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahimahullah) mentioned regarding the above incident:

It is permissible, in exceptional circumstances, to perform Salaah in the way advised by the doctor and this would not fall under the warning mentioned in the Hadith. However, the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum), due to their devotion to Salaah and due to the importance they showed to the commands of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), the Sahaabi Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) was not prepared to undergo the treatment. In fact, the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) were prepared to sacrifice the whole world for a single Salaah.
