Shu’bah (rahimahullah) narrates:
‘On one occasion, Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was fasting and at the time of iftaar, some food was brought before him. Seeing the food, Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) remarked:
“Hamzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was martyred and we could not find sufficient cloth for his kafan, and he was better than me.
Mus’ab bin Umair (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was martyred and we could not find sufficient cloth for his kafan, and he was also better than me.
We, on the other hand, have been granted abundant wealth. I fear that it should not be that we are being rewarded (with this wealth) for our good deeds in this world.”
Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) thereafter stood up without eating.”’ (Musannaf Ibnu Abi Shaibah#19440)
Imaam Zuhri (rahimahullah) relates:
‘Once, during the time of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) spent half of his wealth for the sake of Allah Ta’ala. At that time, half of his wealth equalled four thousand dirhams (silver coins). Sometime later, he also spent forty thousand dirhams in charity. On another occasion, he gave forty thousand dinaars (gold coins) in the path of Allah Ta’ala.
On yet another occasion, he gave five hundred horses to be used as conveyances by the mujaahideen fighting in the path of Allah Ta’ala. Thereafter, he gave another one thousand five hundred riding animals to be used in the path of Allah Ta’ala.’
