Receiving Glad Tidings of Good Fortune and Forgiveness in a Dream

One night, Hazrat Abdur Rahmaan bin Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) fell unconscious for a long period of time during his illness until those around him thought that his soul had departed. They covered him with a cloth and moved away from him. His wife, Ummu Kulthum bint ‘Uqbah, immediately sought the help of Allah Ta’ala through adopting patience and performing salaah (as we have been commanded to do in the Qur’aan Kareem).

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) remained unconscious for a long time. Thereafter, he regained consciousness and the first thing he uttered was the takbeer. The people of the house and those around them also shouted out the takbeer. He then asked them, “Did I fall unconscious?” They replied in the affirmative.

He then said to them, “You have spoken the truth. (While I was in the state of unconsciousness), I was taken by two angels in the form of men, who seemed to be stern and strict (in their appearance). They said to me, ‘Proceed ahead; we are taking you for judgement to (Allah Ta’ala) who is the All-Mighty, the one who grants protection and the All-Knowing.’

Thus, they took me with them and continued until they met an angel in the form of a man who asked them where they were taking me. They said, ‘We are taking him for judgement to (Allah Ta’ala) who is the All-Mighty, the one who grants protection and the All-Knowing.’

The angel told them, ‘Return him to the world, for he is among those individuals for whom Allah Ta’ala has decreed good fortune and forgiveness while they were still in the wombs of their mothers. Furthermore, he has been permitted by Allah Ta’ala to remain in the world for a further period so that his sons may enjoy and benefit from his company until the time when Allah Ta’ala wishes to take him away from the world.’”

After this incident, Hazrat Abdur Rahmaan bin Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) remained alive for a month. After a month had passed, he passed away according to the decree of Allah Ta’ala. (Dalaa’ilun Nubuwwah 7/43, Taareekh Ibn ‘Asaakir 35/297)
