The Severe Consequence of Ill-Treating One’s Parents

On one occasion, an elderly man came to Hazrat Sheikhul Hadith Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) and complained to him saying, “I am now advanced in age, yet my son beat me and dragged me for some distance, kicking me out of the house.” Hearing this, Hazrat Sheikh (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) sympathized with the man and made du‘aa for him.

Thereafter, Hazrat Sheikh (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) addressed a person, who was also present when the elderly man had come, saying, “When a person ill-treats his parents, then apart from being punished in the Hereafter, he will also be punished in this world. Therefore, enquire from people who know him, and who are of his age or older, in regard to the manner in which he had treated his father. It is most likely that he had ill-treated his father in the same way.”

The following week, after making the enquiry, the person returned and said, “Hazrat! What you mentioned is absolutely correct! He had beaten his father in the same manner. In fact, I had found out that the distance which his son dragged him was approximately the same distance that he had dragged his own father.”

When Hazrat Sheikh (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) heard this, he remarked, “The person is now being punished in the world for ill-treating his father.”
