Divine Aversion to Pagan Customs – Part Three

It is reported from Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) that he heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) saying:

(In the days of Jaahiliyyah, prior to Islam,) the thought of participating in any custom of Jaahiliyyah never occurred to me, except on two occasions. However, on these two occasions, Allah Ta‘ala saved me and protected me from participating in these customs.

One night, I said to my companion who grazed goats with me, “Keep an eye on the animals as I wish to go to Makkah Mukarramah to listen to some story telling.” As I entered Makkah Mukarramah, I heard music coming from a certain place. Upon enquiry, I learnt that it was the wedding of a certain person. As soon as I sat at the wedding, I was overcome with sleep and Allah Ta‘ala sealed my ears from the music. By Allah! I remained asleep until it was only the intense heat of the sun that awoke me the next morning. After awaking, I returned to my companion who asked me what I saw. I replied that I saw absolutely nothing and then related how I had fallen off to sleep.

The following night, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) again decided to join the wedding. However, Allah Ta‘ala again caused him to fall asleep.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) says, “By Allah! After this, I never thought of joining in any Jaahiliyyah customs until Allah Ta‘ala blessed me and honored me with prophethood.”
