‘Abdul Muttalib thereafter took a few people with him and proceeded to the Ka‘bah so that they could all implore and beg Allah Ta‘ala in du‘aa. At this juncture, ‘Abdul Muttalib recited the following poetic couplets of du‘aa:
لاهمّ إن المرء يمنع رحله فامنع رحالك
“O Allah! A man takes care of his house, You take care of Your house.
And assist Your people against the people of the cross and its worshippers.
Their cross and their schemes can never overcome that which You have planned.
They dragged (and brought) all their forces and their elephants to capture Your dependants.
Out of ignorance, they have plotted to destroy your haram, and they failed to consider Your greatness.”
On completing his du‘aa, ‘Abdul Muttalib, together with his companions, climbed the mountain. Thereafter, as Abrahah and his army advanced to demolish the Ka‘bah, flocks upon flocks of small birds suddenly appeared by the command of Allah Ta‘ala. Every bird carried pebbles in its beak and claws, and the birds rained these pebbles on Abrahah and his army all at once. Through the power of Allah Ta‘ala, these pebbles had the effect of bullets, as they would strike the head and emerge from the bottom. Whoever was struck by these pebbles would be killed. In this manner, Abrahah’s army was completely destroyed. Abrahah’s whole body then erupted with sores which caused his body to rot and which leaked pus and blood. One by one, his limbs were separated and from his body. Eventually, his chest split open and his heart fell out, causing him to die. Once they were all dead, Allah Ta‘ala sent a flood that washed them all into the sea.
The last remnant of the oppressors was cut off and all praise be to Allah Ta‘ala, The Rabb of the worlds.
