Hazrat Talhah’s (rahdiyallahu ‘anhu) wife, Su‘da bint ‘Awf al-Muriyyah mentioned the following incident regarding her husband Hazrat Talhah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu):
“One day, Talhah entered the home in the state of distress. When I saw in this condition, I said to him, ‘Why is it that I see you sad and distressed? What is the matter? Did I do something due to which I see you perturbed? Please tell me so that I will be able to remove your distress.’
He replied, ‘No, you have not done anything which has hurt me and really, what an excellent life companion you are for a Muslim man like myself.’
I then asked him, ‘Explain to me what is the matter that causes you distress.’
He said to me, ‘The wealth I have in my possession has increased and this has become a great burden for me.’
I then consoled him saying, ‘There is no need for you to worry. Why don’t you distribute it among the poor?’
Hazrat Talhah (rahdiyallahu ‘anhu) then began distributing it among the poor until not a single dirham remained.”
Talhah ibn Yahya (rahimahullah) mentioned, “I asked the treasurer of Hazrat Talhah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), ‘How much wealth did Talhah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) distribute at that occasion?’ He replied, ‘He distributed four hundred thousand dirhams (among the poor on that occasion).'” (Hilyatul Awliyaa 1/88)
