The Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) once said to a bedouin, “Go and enquire from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) as to who Allah Ta’ala is referring to (in the following verse of the Quraan Majeed) “from among them (the Sahaabah) are those who fulfilled their pledge (with Allah Ta’ala of remaining steadfast on the battlefield prepared to sacrifice their lives for deen).”
The Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) did not have the courage to ask (Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) directly) out of deep respect and honour for him. (Thus, they asked the bedouin to ask Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) on their behalf).
When the bedouin asked Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) did not respond. The bedouin posed the question for the second and third time, but Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) remained silent.
Hazrat Talhah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) says:
I then entered the Masjid while I was wearing a green kurta. When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) saw me, he said: “Where is the person who enquired about (the Aayah in which Allah Ta’ala mentioned) “those who fulfilled their pledge (with Allah Ta’ala of remaining steadfast on the battlefield prepared to sacrifice their lives for deen)”?”
The bedouin replied, “I was the one who enquired, O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).”
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then said: “This person (referring to Hazrat Talhah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)) is among those people who fulfilled their pledge (with Allah Ta’ala of remaining steadfast on the battlefield prepared to sacrifice their lives for deen).” (Jaami’ Tirmidhi # 3742)
