A man from the Banu Sulaym tribe mentioned the following:
“I was once seated in a gathering in which Abu Zarr was also present. The thought was in my mind that perhaps Abu Zarr is upset with Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) due to Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) asking him to leave Madinah Munawwarah and settle in Rabadha.
During the course of the gathering, someone passed a remark against Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). When Hazrat Abu Zarr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) heard the person’s negative remark about Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), he immediately responded saying:
“Do not say anything about Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) besides good, for I bear witness that I was present on one occasion where I witnessed something special taking place with Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu anhu) which I will never forget.
“Once, I sought permission to be with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in seclusion so that I could benefit from him and hear what advice he would give me.
“After remaining in seclusion with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) for some time, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) entered the blessed presence of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), followed by Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), and then Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). They all came to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), one after the other, with a short interval in-between.
“While we all were present with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), he took some pebbles into his blessed hand, and the pebbles began to recite tasbeeh in his blessed hand. The tasbeeh of the pebbles was so audible to us that it sounded to us like the buzzing of bees. He then handed the pebbles to Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), and they continued to recite tasbeeh in his hand. When he placed them on the ground, they became silent.
“Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then handed them to Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), and they began to recite tasbeeh in his hand also. Thereafter, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) took them from Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu anhu) and placed them on the ground, and they became silent.
“Thereafter, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) handed the pebbles to Hazrat Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), and they also began to recite tasbeeh in his hand. He then took them back from him and placed them on the ground, after which they became silent.”
