Hazrat Shaqeeq bin Salamah (rahimahullah), the student of Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), narrates that on one occasion, Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) delivered a khutbah.
During the khutbah, he mentioned, “By the qasam of Allah! I have learnt more than seventy surahs of the Quraan Kareem directly from Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). I take an oath in the name of Allah that the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) are aware that I am among the most knowledgeable of them with regards to the Quraan. At the same time, I do not regard myself to be the best of them.”
According to one narration, Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) also mentioned, “Had I known of any person who is more knowledgeable than me (with regards to the Quraan Kareem), then I would have travelled to him to learn the knowledge from him.”
Hazrat Shaqeeq bin Salamah (rahimahullah) mentioned, “(After this khutbah), I went and sat in the gatherings of the other Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) to listen to what they would say (regarding the khutbah of Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)). I did not hear any one of them rejecting or refuting what he had said.” (Saheeh Bukhaari #5000, Saheeh Muslim #2462, Fathul Baari 48/9)
