Duaas after Eating

Duaa One:

اَلحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مُسْلِمِينَ

All praise is due to Allah Ta’ala who gave us food and drink and made us Muslims.

عن أبي سعيد الخدري أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: كان إذا فرغ من طعامه قال: الحمد لله الذي أطعمنا وسقانا وجعلنا مسلمين (سنن أبي داود رقم 3850)

Hazrat Abu Sa’eed (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would recite the following duaa after eating: 

اَلحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مُسْلِمِينَ

Duaa Two:

اَلحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَذَا الطَّعَامَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِن غَيرِ حَولٍ مِّنِّي وَلَا قُوَّة

All praise is due to Allah Ta’ala who provided me with this food, and He granted it to me without any effort and ability from me.

عن سهل بن معاذ بن أنس، عن أبيه، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: من أكل طعاما ثم قال: الحمد لله الذي أطعمني هذا الطعام ورزقنيه من غير حول مني ولا قوة، غفر له ما تقدم من ذنبه وما تأخر  (سنن أبي داود رقم 4023)

Hazrat Muaadh bin Anas (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “The one who consumes his meal and thereafter recites the following duaa, Allah Ta’ala will forgive all his past and future (minor) sins.

اَلحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَذَا الطَّعَامَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِن غَيرِ حَولٍ مِّنِّي وَلَا قُوَّة

Duaa Three:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَ، وَسَقَى وَسَوَّغَهُ وَجَعَلَ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا

All praise is due to Allah Ta’ala who fed (us) food and provided (us with) drink, and caused it (the food and drink) to go down (our throats) easily, and made an exit for it (for the waste to leave our stomachs).

عن أبي أيوب الأنصاري، قال: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا أكل أو شرب قال: الحمد لله الذي أطعم، وسقى وسوغه وجعل له مخرجا (سنن أبي داود رقم 3851)

Hazrat Abu Ayyoob Ansaari (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would recite the following duaa after he ate and drank:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَ، وَسَقَى وَسَوَّغَهُ وَجَعَلَ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا

Duaa Four:

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ، وَأَطْعِمْنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهُ

O Allah, put barakah in this food and grant us something better than it

عن ابن عباس، قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: إذا أكل أحدكم طعاما فليقل: اللهم بارك لنا فيه، وأطعمنا خيرا منه (سنن أبي داود رقم 3730)

Hazrat ibn Abbaas (Radhiyallahu Anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said: “When you complete your meal, then recite the following duaa:”

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ، وَأَطْعِمْنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهُ

Duaa Five: The following duaa should be recited when lifting the food and the dastarkhaan (eating cloth):

اَلحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ حَمْدًا كَثِيرًا طَيِّبًا مُبَارَكًا فِيهِ غَيرَ مَكْفِيٍّ وَلَا مُوَدَّعٍ وَلَا مُسْتَغْنًى عَنهُ رَبَّنَا

All praise is due to Allah Ta’ala, such praises that are plentiful, pure and full of blessings. O our Rabb, we do not regard our praises to be sufficient (for the food You have granted us) nor do we regard our praise to be the final praise (for what You have granted us), and nor do we consider ourselves to be independent (of praising You for all that You have granted us).

عن أبي أمامة، قال كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا رفعت المائدة قال: الحمد لله حمدا كثيرا طيبا مباركا فيه غير مكفي، ولا مودع، ولا مستغنى عنه ربنا (سنن أبي داود رقم 3849)

Hazrat Abu Umaamah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would recite the following duaa when the dastarkhaan was being removed:

اَلحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ حَمْدًا كَثِيرًا طَيِّبًا مُبَارَكًا فِيهِ غَيرَ مَكْفِيٍّ وَلَا مُوَدَّعٍ وَلَا مُسْتَغْنًى عَنهُ رَبَّنَا

Duaa Six:

الحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَفَانَا وَأَرْوَانَا، غَيْرَ مَكْفِيٍّ وَلاَ مَكْفُور

All praise is due to Allah Ta’ala who fulfilled our need and quenched our thirst, (O Allah), we do not regard our praises to be sufficient (in praising You for the food You have granted us), nor are we ungrateful (for Your favours upon us).

عن أبي أمامة : أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كان إذا فرغ من طعامه – وقال مرة: إذا رفع مائدته – قال: الحمد لله الذي كفانا وأروانا، غير مكفي ولا مكفور (صحيح البخاري رقم 5459)

Hazrat Abu Umaamah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would recite the following Duaa upon completing his meals or at the time when the dastarkhaan (eating cloth) would be lifted:

الحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَفَانَا وَأَرْوَانَا، غَيْرَ مَكْفِيٍّ وَلاَ مَكْفُور

Duaa Seven:

اَلحَمْدُ للهِ الَّذِي أَشْبَعَنَا وَأَرْوَانَا وَأَنْعَمَ وَأفْضَلَ

All praise belongs to Allah, the one who has satiated us, quenched our thirst and has showered us with bounties and blessed us with His grace.

عن ابن عباس قال: … فلما أكلوا وشبعوا قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: خبز ولحم، وبسر وتمر ورطب. ودمعت عيناه، ثم قال: هذا من النعيم الذي تسألون عنه يوم القيامة . فكبر ذلك على أصحابه، فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : إذا أصبتم مثل هذا، وضربتم بأيديكم، فقولوا: بسم الله، وبركة الله، فإذا شبعتم فقولوا الحمد لله الذي أشبعنا وأروانا وأنعم وأفضل، فإن هذا كفاف بهذا. (مجمع الزوائد رقم 18261)

Hazrat ibn Abbaas (Radhiyallahu Anhuma) reports that on one occasion, after Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) ate and were satiated, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) enumerated the varieties of food they had eaten by saying: “(We have been granted) bread, meat, semi-ripe dates, dry dates, and fresh dates.” After enumerating the varieties of food, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) began to cry (out of gratitude to Allah Ta‘ala), and thereafter said, “All these are the bounties of Allah Ta‘ala regarding which you will be questioned on the day of Qiyaamah.” This statement of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) greatly concerned the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) (as they feared accountability in the court of Allah Ta‘ala). Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then said: “When you obtain such food and intend to partake of it, then commence eating by taking the name of Allah Ta’ala saying:  

بِسْمِ اللهِ وَبَرَكَةِ اللهِ

And when you are satisfied, then recite the following Duaa, it will suffice (in showing gratitude to Allah Ta‘ala and you will not be questioned) for what you have eaten.”
