Sunnats and Aadaab of the Musjid – Part 8

1. While in the musjid, remain constantly engaged in the aa’maal of the musjid e.g. zikr of Allah Ta’ala, tilaawah of the Quraan Majeed, salaah, etc.^[1]

2. Apart from going to the musjid to perform salaah, if there is a program being held in the musjid, then one should make the intention of going to the musjid to acquire the knowledge of Deen. If one has the ability to teach Deen then one should make the intention of coming to the musjid to impart the knowledge of Deen to people if one finds the opportunity to do so.

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول من جاء مسجدي هذا لم يأته إلا لخير يتعلمه أو يعلمه فهو بمنزلة المجاهد في سبيل الله ومن جاء لغير ذلك فهو بمنزلة الرجل ينظر إلى متاع غيره (سنن ابن ماجة، الرقم: 227)^[2]

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) mentions, “I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) saying, “Whoever comes to this musjid of mine, and he does not come for any purpose besides learning some good or teaching some good, then he is like the one who is striving in the path of Allah Ta‘ala, and the one who comes to the musjid for any other purpose (besides the worship of Allah Ta‘ala), then he is like a man who looks at the merchandise of others (being sold, yet he does not earn anything).”

عن أبي هريرة قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من أتى المسجد لشيء فهو حظه (سنن أبي داود، الرقم: 472)^[3]

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Whoever comes to the musjid for some purpose, then that will be his share (i.e. he will be rewarded according to his intention).”

3. Together with keeping the musjid clean, also keep the musjid fragranced by burning oudh, etc.

عن عائشة رضي الله عنها قالت أمر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ببناء المساجد في الدور وأن تنظف وتطيب وقال سفيان قوله ببناء المساجد في الدور يعني القبائل (سنن الترمذي، الرقم: 594)^[4]

Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) commanded that masaajid be built in the different localities, and that the masaajid be kept clean and be fragranced.”

عن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما أن عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه كان يجمر المسجد في كل جمعة (المصنف لابن أبي شيبة، الرقم: 7523)

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) would burn incense in the musjid on the Day of Jumuah.

4. If you are feeling sleepy in the musjid then change your place by moving and sitting in a different place in the musjid, provided it is not at the time when the khutbah is in progress. Through moving to another place, one’s sleepiness will be removed.

عن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما قال سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول إذا نعس أحدكم وهو في المسجد فليتحول من مجلسه ذلك إلى غيره (سنن أبي داود، الرقم: 1119)^[5]

Hazrat Ibnu Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) mentions, “I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) saying, ‘When any one of you feels sleepy while he is in the musjid then he should move from the place where he is sitting to another place.’”

عن ابن مسعود رضي الله عنه قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إن من أشراط الساعة أن يمر الرجل في طول المسجد وعرضه لا يصلي فيه ركعتين (المعجم الكبير للطبراني، الرقم: 9488) رواه الطبراني في الكبير ورجاله رجال الصحيح إلا أن سلمة بن كهيل وإن كان سمع من الصحابة لم أجد له رواية عن ابن مسعود (مجمع الزوائد، الرقم: 2039)

عن أنس بن مالك رضي الله عنه قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم … إن هذه المساجد لا تصلح لشيء من هذا البول ولا القذر إنما هي لذكر الله عز وجل والصلاة وقراءة القرآن أو كما قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم (صحيح مسلم، الرقم: 285)
