Sunnats and Aadaab of the Host – 3

6. It is sunnah for the host to personally serve his guests if he is able to. If due to some reason, he cannot be present, he should make arrangements for his guests to be fed in his absence.

In the Qur’aan Majeed, Allah Ta’ala mentions the incident of Hazrat Ebrahim (alayhis salaam) personally serving his guests. Allah Ta’ala says,

And certainly did Our messengers come to Ebrahim (alaihis salaam) with glad tidings. They said, “Salaam (Peace).” He replied saying, “Salaam (Peace),” and did not delay in bringing (them) a roasted calf.

Hazrat Abdur Rahmaan bin Abi Bakr (radhiyallahu anhuma) reports that Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu anhu) had invited a group of people home. He then mentioned to (his son) Abdur Rahmaan, “Look after your guests (and serve them), as I am going to Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). You should complete serving them before I return.”

7. One should not delay in serving the guest after his arrival. Delaying in serving the guest can be a means of causing inconvenience to him or affecting his routine and schedule.

In the Qur’aan Majeed, Allah Ta’ala mentions Hazrat Ebrahim (alayhis salaam) serving his guests without any delay. Allah Ta’ala says,

And certainly did Our messengers come to Ebrahim (alaihis salaam) with glad tidings. They said, “Salaam (Peace).” He replied saying, “Salaam (Peace),” and did not delay in bringing (them) a roasted calf.

On one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam), Hazrat Abu Bakr and Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu anhuma) came to the home of an Ansaari Sahaabi. When he saw Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) and his two companions, he was extremely happy and said, “Praise be to Allah! Today no one has more honourable guests than me.” He then immediately presented to them a variety of dates, and said to them, “Eat from these (dates).” He thereafter slaughtered a goat for them which they had also ate from. (Saheeh Muslim #2038)

It is reported that Hazrat Haatim Al-Asamm (rahimahullah) said, “To do things in haste (without thinking) is from shaytaan, except in five actions, as (hastening in fulfilling these five actions) is from the sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam). These five actions are 1) Serving the food to the guest (when he arrives) 2) Carrying out the funeral arrangements for the deceased immediately upon his demise 3) Performing the nikaah of an unmarried girl (when she reaches the age of marriage and a suitable match is found) 4) Settling a debt (when it becomes due) 5) Making sincere taubah from a sin (after committing it).
