Ninth Quality – Being Filled with the Fear of Allah Ta‘ala

The ninth quality of the true Ulama of the Aakhirah is that every move of his is filled with the fear of Allah Ta‘ala. The greatness, majesty, awe and fear of Allah Ta‘ala which he possesses in his heart is reflected in his clothing, his ways and mannerisms, his speech and even in his silence.

Merely looking at such an Aalim’s face causes one to remember Allah Ta‘ala. Calmness, dignity, humility and modesty are part of his very nature.

He refrains from vain or nonsensical speech and futile discussions, and he avoids all forms of show and formality when speaking, as these are signs of pride and haughtiness, and indicate that one lacks the fear of Allah Ta‘ala.

Once, Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said, “Acquire the knowledge of deen, and also acquire the calmness and composure required for the knowledge of deen. The one from whom you acquire the knowledge of deen – conduct yourself with extreme humility before him, and do not become from the proud and haughty Ulama.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “The best people of my ummah are those who are such that when they are in public, they appear happy, thinking of the limitless mercy of Allah Ta‘ala, but when they are in seclusion, then they weep, fearing His punishment. They are bodily on earth, but their hearts are connected to the Hereafter.”

Someone asked Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), “Which is the best of deeds?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “Staying away from that which is haraam, and keeping your tongue moist with the zikr of Allah Ta‘ala.”

Someone asked, “Who is the best companion?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “The one who reminds you to perform good deeds when you become negligent, and if you remember to perform good deeds, then he assists you in carrying them out.”

Someone asked, “Who is a bad companion?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “The one who does not warn you when you are negligent in doing good actions, and he does not help you when you want to do good.”

Someone asked, “Who is the greatest Aalim?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “The one who fears Allah Ta‘ala the most.”

Someone asked, “Which type of people should we associate with and keep their company?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “Those who are such that on seeing them, you are reminded of Allah Ta‘ala.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “The person who will be the most comfortable (and without worries) in the Aakhirah will be the one who remained worried and concerned in this life (about meeting Allah Ta‘ala and giving an account for his deeds), and the happiest person in the Aakhirah will be the one who wept the most in this life (out of the fear of Allah Ta‘ala).”
