Three Qualities to seek in a Friend

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Abbaas (Radhiyallahu Anhuma) reports that on one occasion Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was asked: “Which person is the best to be taken as an associate (and friend)?” Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: “The one who, whenever you see him, you are reminded of Allah Ta’ala; the one who, when he speaks, his speech causes your knowledge and understanding of Deen to increase; and the one whose actions creates the awareness and reminds you of the Aakhirat.”

Keeping the Company of the Ulama

Hadhrat Abu Umaamah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Hadhrat Luqmaan (Alayhis Salaam) once advised his son saying: “O my beloved son, ensure that you always remain in the company of the Ulama and listen attentively to the speech of the wise, for certainly Allah Ta’ala enlivens the dead heart with the light of wisdom, just as he gives life to the dead earth with a downpour of rain.”

Remain in the Gatherings of Knowledge

Hadhrat ibn Abbaas (Radhiyallahu Anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “When you pass by the gardens of Jannah, then graze (to your heart’s content).” The Sahaabah (Radhiyallahu Anhum) asked: “O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), what are the gardens of Jannah?” Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: “The gatherings of knowledge.”

Fabricating Lies and Attributing it to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)

Hadhrat Mugheerah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Indeed fabricating a lie and attributing it to me (is so serious that it) is not like fabricating a lie and attributing it to anyone else. Thus the one who lies against me intentionally, then he should prepare his abode in Jahannum.”

Knowingly Spreading Fabricated Ahaadith

Hadhrat Samurah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “The one who relates a Hadith from me which he regards to be lies (a fabricated narration), then he will be regarded (by Allah Ta’ala) as one of the liars.” (i.e. just as the one who had fabricated the narration will be deserving of Jahannum, the one who narrates it knowing that it is not true will also be deserving of Jahannum.
