Using an Inhaler (pump) while Fasting

Q: Is it permissible for an asthma patient to use an inhaler (pump) while fasting? The inhaler contains salbutamol (liquid medication). If one’s fast breaks through using the inhaler, then will qadha and kaffarah become waajib or only qadha?

A: Using the inhaler (pump) while fasting will nullify the fast as the inhaler contains medication. Through one orally taking medication while fasting or one taking medication through the nasal passage, one’s fast will break. However, it will only be waajib (compulsory) for one to keep qadha for the broken fast.

وما وصل إلى الجوف أو إلى الدماغ من المخارق الأصلية كالأنف والأذن والدبر بأن استعط أو احتقن أو أقطر في أذنه فوصل إلى الجوف أو إلى الدماغ فسد صومه (بدائع الصنائع ج2 ص 93)

المريض إذا خاف على نفسه التلف أو ذهاب عضو يفطر بالإجماع وإن خاف زيادة العلة وامتداده فكذلك وعليه القضاء إذا أفطر كذا في المحيط (الفتاوى الهندية ج1 ص207)
