On one occasion, whilst Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) was engaged in performing salaah by the Ka’bah, one of the leaders of the Quraish Uqbah bin Abi Mu’ait approached him with the sinister intention of persecuting him. Uqbah then removed his shawl and began ruthlessly strangling Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). No sooner did Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (Radhiallahu Anhu) learn about this, he rushed to the scene to rescue Rasulullah (Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam). He immediately grabbed Uqbah by his shoulder and pushed him away from Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Hadhrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq then reproachingly addressed Uqbah in the following words:
أَتَقْتُلُونَ رَجُلًا أَن يَقُولَ رَبِّيَ اللَّـهُ وَقَدْ جَاءَكُم بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ مِن رَّبِّكُمْ
Do you intend killing a man on the mere basis that he proclaims that Allah Ta’aala is my creator; whilst he has brought to you clear signs from your Lord? [1]
