Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (rahimahullah) once mentioned the following:
Today, we find that ignorant people are carrying out such practices and actions at the graves of the buzurgaan-e-deen (pious saints) that are totally wrong.
They openly commit shirk and bid’aat (innovated practices) at the graves of the saints, and when people try to stop them from their wrongs, they accuse them of not having love for the saints.
Just look at what is taking place in Ajmer. The Buzurg who is buried there was such a great personality – Hazrat Khwaajah Mu’eenuddeen Chishti (rahimahullah). He was a person who spent his entire life in spreading tauheed, propagating Islam and opposing the ways of the kuffaar.
Now, those who claim to follow him and love him are committing acts of shirk and bid’ah at his grave!
These are the very people who regard themselves to be the true followers and faithful devotees of this saint! They have taken the grave, which is supposed to be a place where one takes lesson (and remembers death), as a centre of entertainment, sin and transgression. They do not have the fear of Allah Ta‘ala in their hearts.
When I hear of the wrongs that take place at the graves of these Buzurgaan-e-Deen, my heart feels great pain. These ignorant people are spoiling the names of these great saints.
Let alone complaints about ignorant people, even people who are regarded as knowledgeable in deen – they too have now commenced taking part in these wrong practices and actions of shirk and bid’ah at the graves of these saints – innaa lillaahi wa innaa ilayhi raaji’oon!
