Duas before making Salaam

Dua One

After reciting tashahhud and durood-ebrahim in the last rakaat of salaah, one should recite a dua from the Quraan or Hadith before making salaam.

Among the duas one may recite is the following dua:

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّيْ ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِيْ ظُلْمًا كَثِيرًا وَلَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوْبَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ فَاغْفِرْ لِيْ مَغْفِرَةً مِّنْ عِنْدِكَ وَارْحَمْنِيْ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُوْرُ الرَّحِيْم

O Allah! I have oppressed myself excessively (through committing sins), and no one can forgive sins besides You, so forgive me with special forgiveness from Your side and show mercy to me, for indeed You alone are All-Forgiving and All-Merciful.

عن أبي بكر الصديق رضي الله عنه أنه قال لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: علمني دعاء أدعو به في صلاتي قال: قل: اللهم إني ظلمت نفسي ظلما كثيرا ولا يغفر الذنوب إلا أنت فاغفر لي مغفرة من عندك وارحمني إنك أنت الغفور الرحيم (صحيح البخاري، الرقم: 834)

Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (radhiyallahu anhu) reports, “On one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) taught me the following dua to recite in my salaah:

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّيْ ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِيْ ظُلْمًا كَثِيرًا وَلَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوْبَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ فَاغْفِرْ لِيْ مَغْفِرَةً مِّنْ عِنْدِكَ وَارْحَمْنِيْ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُوْرُ الرَّحِيْم

Dua Two

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْمَأْثَمِ وَالْمَغْرَمِ

O Allah, I seek Your protection from the punishment of the grave, I seek Your protection from the mischief of Dajjaal and I seek Your protection from the trials of life and death. O Allah, I seek Your protection from sins and from debts.

عن عائشة رضي الله عنها أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يدعو في الصلاة: اللهم إني أعوذ بك من عذاب القبر وأعوذ بك من فتنة المسيح الدجال وأعوذ بك من فتنة المحيا والممات اللهم إني أعوذ بك من المأثم والمغرم (صحيح مسلم، الرقم: 589)

Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu anha) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) would recite the following dua in salaah:

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْمَأْثَمِ وَالْمَغْرَمِ

Dua Three

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَمِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ وَمِنْ شَرِّ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ

O Allah, I seek Your protection from the punishment of Jahannum, from the punishment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of Dajjaal.

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: إذا فرغ أحدكم من التشهد الآخر فليتعوذ بالله من أربع: من عذاب جهنم ومن عذاب القبر ومن فتنة المحيا والممات ومن شر المسيح الدجال (صحيح مسلم، الرقم: 588)

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “When you complete reciting tashahhud (and durood) in the last rakaat, then seek the protection of Allah Ta’ala from four things, from the punishment of Jahannum, from the punishment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of Dajjaal.

Dua Four

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي مَا قَدَّمْتُ وَمَا أَخَّرْتُ، وَمَا أَسْرَرْتُ وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ، وَمَا أَسْرَفْتُ وَمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّي، أَنْتَ الْمُقَدِّمُ وَأَنْتَ الْمُؤَخِّرُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

O Allah, forgive my sins, my past sins and my future sins, the sins done in secret and the sins committed openly, and the (major) sins where I surpassed the limits (of Shariah) and the sins that You have more knowledge than me. You are the first and You are the last. There is none worthy of worship besides You.

عن علي بن أبي طالب عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم… أنه يكون من آخر ما يقول بين التشهد والتسليم: اللهم اغفر لي ما قدمت وما أخرت، وما أسررت وما أعلنت، وما أسرفت، وما أنت أعلم به مني، أنت المقدم وأنت المؤخر، لا إله إلا أنت. (صحيح مسلم، الرقم: 771)

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that among the last duas which Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) would recite between tashahhud and salaam is the following dua:

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي مَا قَدَّمْتُ وَمَا أَخَّرْتُ، وَمَا أَسْرَرْتُ وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ، وَمَا أَسْرَفْتُ وَمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّي، أَنْتَ الْمُقَدِّمُ وَأَنْتَ الْمُؤَخِّرُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Dua Five

اللَّهُمَّ حَاسِبْنِي حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا

O Allah, put me through an easy reckoning

عن عائشة، قالت: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، يقول في بعض صلاته: اللهم حاسبني حسابا يسيرا (المستدرك على الصحيحين للحاكم، الرقم: 190)

It is reported from Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu anha) that she heard Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) recite the following dua in his salaah:

اللَّهُمَّ حَاسِبْنِي حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا

Dua Six

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أسألُكَ يا اللهُ الأحَدُ الصَّمَدُ الَّذِي لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُواً أَحَدٌ أَنْ تَغْفِرَ لِيْ ذُنُوبِي، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ

O Allah! I ask you – O Allah, the One and Only, the One who is Independent and the entire creation is dependent on Him, Who has not begotten anyone (i.e. no child was born to Him), nor was He begotten (i.e. He was not born to any father), and there is none like unto Him – (I ask you, O Allah) to forgive me for my sins. Indeed You are the Most forgiving, Most merciful.

عن مِحْجَنَ بنَ الأَدرَع قال: دخل رسولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم المسجدَ فإذا هو برجلِ قد قضى صلاتَه وهو يتشهَّدُ وهو يقول: اللهم إني أسألُكَ يا اللهُ الأحدُ الصمدُ، الذي لم يلد ولم يُولَد، ولم يكن له كُفواً أحدٌ أن تَغفِرَ لي ذنوبي إنك أنْت الغفورُ الرحيمُ قال: فقال: قد غُفِرَ له، قد غُفِرَ له ثلاثاً  (سنن أبي داود، الرقم: 985)

Hazrat Mihjan bin Adra’ (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that on one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) entered the musjid and came across a person sitting in tashahhud about to complete his salaah. He was reciting the following dua,

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أسألُكَ يا اللهُ الأحَدُ الصَّمَدُ الَّذِي لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُواً أَحَدٌ أَنْ تَغْفِرَ لِيْ ذُنُوبِي، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ

(Upon hearing this dua), Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said thrice, “He has been forgiven.”

Dua Seven

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ كُلِّهِ عَاجِلِهِ وَآجِلِهِ، مَا عَلِمْنَا مِنْهُ وَمَا لَمْ نَعْلَمْ، وَنَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّرِّ كُلِّهِ عَاجِلِهِ وَآجِلِهِ، مَا عَلِمْنَا مِنْهُ وَمَا لَمْ نَعْلَمْ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ مَا سَأَلَكَ مِنْهُ عِبَادُكَ الصَّالِحُونَ، ونَسْتَعِيذُ بِكَ مِمَّا اسْتَعَاذَ مِنْهُ عِبَادُكَ الصَّالِحُونَ، رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ، رَبَّنَا إِنَّنَا آمَنَّا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرْ عَنَّا سَيِّئَاتِنَا وتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ الْأَبْرَارِ، رَبَّنَا وآتِنَا مَا وَعَدْتَنَا عَلَى رُسُلِكَ وَلَا تُخْزِنَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِنَّكَ لَا تُخْلِفُ الْمِيعَادَ

O Allah, we ask You for all good, whether immediate or later, that which we know and that which we do not know. And we seek Your protection from all evil, whether immediate or later, that which we know and that which we do not know.

O Allah, we ask You for all the good which was asked for by Your pious servants and we seek Your protection from all the evil which Your pious servants had sought Your protection from.

O our Rabb! Bestow us in this world with goodness, and in the Hereafter with goodness, and save us from the punishment of the fire (of Jahannum)!

O our Rabb, indeed we have believed, so forgive our sins and pardon our transgressions and let us die with the righteous.

O our Rabb, grant us whatever You have promised to us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Qiyaamah. Verily You never break Your promise.

عن عبد الله بن مسعود قال: كان دعاء النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بعد التشهد في الفريضة: اللهم إنا نسألك من الخير كله عاجله وآجله، ما علمنا منه وما لم نعلم، ونعوذ بك من الشر كله عاجله وآجله، ما علمنا منه وما لم نعلم، اللهم إنا نسألك ما سألك منه عبادك الصالحون، ونستعيذ بك مما استعاذ منه عبادك الصالحون، ربنا آتنا في الدنيا حسنة وفي الآخرة حسنة وقنا عذاب النار، ربنا إننا آمنا فاغفر لنا ذنوبنا وكفر عنا سيئاتنا وتوفنا مع الأبرار، ربنا وآتنا ما وعدتنا على رسلك ولا تخزنا يوم القيامة إنك لا تخلف الميعاد ويسلم عن يمينه وعن شماله (المعجم الأوسط، الرقم: 7571)

Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) would recite the following dua after tashahhud in the fardh salaah, and thereafter he would make salaam to his right and to his left.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ كُلِّهِ عَاجِلِهِ وَآجِلِهِ، مَا عَلِمْنَا مِنْهُ وَمَا لَمْ نَعْلَمْ، وَنَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّرِّ كُلِّهِ عَاجِلِهِ وَآجِلِهِ، مَا عَلِمْنَا مِنْهُ وَمَا لَمْ نَعْلَمْ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ مَا سَأَلَكَ مِنْهُ عِبَادُكَ الصَّالِحُونَ، ونَسْتَعِيذُ بِكَ مِمَّا اسْتَعَاذَ مِنْهُ عِبَادُكَ الصَّالِحُونَ، رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ، رَبَّنَا إِنَّنَا آمَنَّا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرْ عَنَّا سَيِّئَاتِنَا وتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ الْأَبْرَارِ، رَبَّنَا وآتِنَا مَا وَعَدْتَنَا عَلَى رُسُلِكَ وَلَا تُخْزِنَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِنَّكَ لَا تُخْلِفُ الْمِيعَادَ
