Dua When Experiencing Bodily Pain

Duaa One:

When one is experiencing bodily pain, one should place his right hand on the affected area and recite bismillah thrice, followed by the following dua seven times:

I seek refuge in Allah Ta‘ala and His power from the evil that I am experiencing and from the evil of that which I fear.

It is reported regarding Hazrat Uthmaan bin Aas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) that he once complained to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) regarding bodily pain that he was experiencing from the time he had accepted Islam. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said to him, “Place your hand on the place where you are feeling the pain on your body, and recite bismillah thrice followed by the following dua seven times:

Duaa Two:

When one is experiencing bodily pain, one should rub his right hand on the area which he is experiencing pain while reciting the following dua seven times:

I seek refuge in the greatness of Allah Ta‘ala and His power from the evil that I am experiencing.

It is reported regarding Hazrat Uthmaan bin Aas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) that he once complained to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) regarding the severe body pains that he was experiencing. He said, “(O Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)), I am experiencing severe body pains which I feel that it is likely that this pain will lead to my death.” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said to him, “Recite the following dua seven times while placing your right hand on the area you experience pain and rubbing it seven times:

Hazrat Uthmaan bin Aas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) further says, “I practiced upon this and Allah Ta‘ala had granted me relief from the pain I was experiencing. Thus, I would continuously advise my family and others to practice upon this.”

Duaa Three:

When one is experiencing bodily pain, one should place his hand on the area which he is experiencing pain and recite the following dua an odd number of times (e.g. three times, five times or seven times)

In the name of Allah Ta‘ala. I seek refuge in the greatness of Allah Ta‘ala and His power from the evil of this pain that I am experiencing.

Hazrat Muhammad bin Saalim (rahimahullah) reports that Hazrat Thaabit Bunaani (rahimahullah) advised him, “O Muhammad! When you experience pain, then place your hand on the area which you experience pain and recite the following dua:

Then raise your hand from the affected area. Thereafter repeat this (placing your hand on the area while reciting the abovementioned dua) an odd number of times (e.g. three times, five times or seven times).”

Hazrat Thaabit Bunaani (rahimahullah) further says, “Hazrat Anas bin Maalik (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had mentioned to me that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had mentioned this (method of seeking shifa) to him.”
