The Signs of Qiyaamah – Part Six

The Ten Physical, Human Features of Dajjaal

In the Mubaarak Ahaadith, Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) has explained to the ummah the physical, human features of Dajjaal. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) describing Dajjaal with physical, human features indicates towards the fact that Dajjaal is a human being. Hence, the belief of the Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa’ah is that Dajjaal is from the species of man, and will emerge in the world at a specific time before Qiyaamah as a major trial for the ummah.

Below are ten physical, human features of Dajjaal which are mentioned in the Mubaarak Ahaadith:

First Feature: Dajjaal having Curly Hair

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “One night, I saw myself (in a dream) at the Ka’bah. I then saw a man with a wheat-coloured complexion, who was the most handsome person of a wheat-coloured complexion that you can ever see. His hair was between his ears and his shoulders. He had combed it, so it was dripping with water. He was leaning on the shoulders of two men and performing tawaaf of the Ka’bah. I asked, ‘Who is this person?’ I was told, ‘This is the Maseeh bin Maryam (‘alaihis salaam).’ Thereafter, I noticed a short man with very curly hair. His right eye was defective, as if it was a protruding grape. I asked, ‘Who is this person?’ I was told, ‘This is Maseeh, Dajjaal.’” (Saheeh Muslim #169)

Second Feature: Dajjaal Having Defective Eyes

Both of Dajjaal’s eyes will be defective. However, one eye will be completely covered with skin, while the other eye will protrude and resemble a grape (as mentioned in the Hadith above).

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Indeed I know that which is with Dajjaal. He will have two rivers flowing with him. One of them will openly appear to be clear water, while the other will openly appear to be a blazing fire. If any person is there at that time, he should definitely go to the river which he sees to be fire and submerse himself in it. Then, he should lower his head and drink from it, for it is cool water. Indeed, the eye of Dajjaal is covered, upon it is a thick flap of skin. Written between his eyes is the word ‘kaafir’ which every believer will read, whether he is literate or illiterate.” (Saheeh Muslim #2934)

Third Feature: Dajjaal being Short, but Stout and Large in Built

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Indeed, Maseeh, Dajjaal, is a short man, his heels are far apart with his feet pointing inwards, his hair is very curly, one of his eyes is defective and the other is erased, neither protruding nor recessed. If the matter becomes confusing for you, then know that your Rabb does not have a defective eye.” (Sunan Abu Dawood #4320)

In another Hadith, Hazrat Tameem Daari (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), described Dajjaal saying, “Then, suddenly, in it (the monastery on the island) was the largest human in built that we ever saw.” (Saheeh Muslim #2942)

Fourth Feature: Dajjaal’s Feet Pointing Inwards (i.e. his heels are far apart and the front portions of his feet are close)

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Indeed, Maseeh, Dajjaal, is a short man, his heels are far apart with his feet pointing inwards.(Sunan Abu Dawood #4320)

Fifth Feature: Dajjaal Having Abundant and Thick Hair

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “The left eye of Dajjaal will be defective and his hair will be abundant and thick. With him will be a garden and a fire. His fire is actually a garden, and his garden is actually a fire.” (Saheeh Muslim #2934)

Sixth Feature: Dajjaal Having a Broad Forehead

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “As for the Maseeh of misguidance, he is a man whose forehead is broad, his left eye is erased and the lower portion of his neck is wide. It is as if he is Abdul Uzza bin Qatan.” (Majma’uz Zawaa’id #12539)

Seventh Feature: Dajjaal Not Having Children

The Hadith of Saheeh Muslim mentions, “Did Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) not say that Dajjaal will be sterile and will have no children?” (Saheeh Muslim #2927)

Eighth Feature: Dajjaal being Fair in Complexion

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was asked regarding Dajjaal and replied, “I saw him to be stout and bulky, and fair with a clear complexion. One of his eyes was protruding as if it was a shining star. His hair was like the branches of a tree.” (Musnad-e-Ahmed #3546)

Ninth Feature: The Word “Kaafir” being Written between the Eyes of Dajjaal

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “The word kaafir will be written between his eyes, every believer will be able to read it, whether he is literate or illiterate.” (Saheeh Muslim #2934)

Tenth Feature: Resembling the kaafir, Abdul Uzza bin Qatan

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “I resemble him (Dajjaal) to Abdul Uzza bin Qatan.” (Saheeh Muslim #2937)

From these aforementioned Ahaadith which contain the ten physical descriptions of Dajjaal, we understand that Dajjaal is from the human species. Had Dajjaal been a jinn, or hybrid between man and jinn, or a world-system, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would have not described him with physical, human attributes.
