Sunnats and Aadaab of Giving and Receiving Gifts – Part 8

1. One should appreciate the gift that one receives, even if it is of little value. One should not regard accepting such a gift to be below one’s dignity, and nor should one feel humiliated by being given such a gift. One should not look at the value of the gift, rather one should look at the love and good-heartedness of the person who is giving the gift. This is the mubaarak teaching of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: يا نساء المسلمات، لا تحقرن جارة لجارتها، ولو فرسن شاة (صحيح البخاري، الرقم: 2566)

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “O Muslim women, a neighbour should not regard any gift that she receives from her neighbour to be insignificant, even if the gift be the trotters of a sheep.”
