Pointless and Absurd Questions of the Disbelievers of Makkah – Part Three

When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) rejected this proposal of the Quraish as well, they replied, “Very well! Make du‘aa to Allah Ta‘ala to send some divine punishment upon us.” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) responded, “It is the prerogative of Allah Ta‘ala to decide whether He will punish you or grant you respite.”

When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said this, ‘Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah stood and said, “O Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! Your people have placed so many proposals before you but you have refused to accept even a single one! O Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! I take an oath in the name of Allah! Even if you ascend into the sky on a staircase and return with a written certificate authorizing your prophethood, and even if four angels return with you and openly announce your prophethood, then too I will not believe you.”

Hearing this, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) became despondent in them accepting his message and returned home.
