Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (rahimahullah) once mentioned the following:
I say this as a sincere well-wisher to each one of you, so you should listen attentively to what I have to say, as what I wish to say is something extremely important and should always be remembered.
In this path (of gaining the love of Allah Ta‘ala), there are two things that are extremely detrimental to the seeker of love. These two things are like a highway robber (that will rob one of all one’s imaan), or they are like a poison that is fatal (to one’s spiritual health).
The first is for one to make excuses to justify one’s mistakes and wrongs, and the second is for one to raise objections against the one who is teaching him and guiding him on the path (i.e. his Sheikh or Ustaad).
