Tasbeehaat/Duaas in Sajdah

In sajdah, one should recite the following tasbeeh thrice or any odd number of times:

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى

Glorified is my Rabb, the most high.

عن عقبة بن عامر قال لما نزلت فسبح باسم ربك العظيم قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم اجعلوها في ركوعكم فلما نزلت سبح اسم ربك الأعلى قال اجعلوها في سجودكم (سنن أبي داود رقم 869 ، رواه أبو داود وسكت عليه هو والمنذري ( مختصر سنن أبي داود 1/ 306 )

Hazrat Uqbah bin Aamir (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that when the verse فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيْم was revealed, Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Recite it in your ruku.” (i.e. recite سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيْم  in your ruku). When the verse سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى was revealed, Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “Recite it in your sajdah.” (i.e. recite سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى in your sajdah).

عن ابن مسعود رضي الله عنهما أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال إذا ركع أحدكم فقال في ركوعه سبحان ربي العظيم ثلاث مرات فقد تم ركوعه وذلك أدناه وإذا سجد فقال في سجوده سبحان ربي الأعلى ثلاث مرات فقد تم سجوده وذلك أدناه قال وفي الباب عن حذيفة و عقبة بن عامر قال أبو عيسى حديث ابن مسعود ليس إسناده بمتصل عون بن عبد الله بن عتبة لم يلق ابن مسعود (جامع الترمذي، الرقم: 261 )

Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said, “When any of you performs ruku and recites سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيْم thrice, then his ruku is complete, and that is the least (of the Sunnah amount). When any of you makes sajdah and recites سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى thrice, then his sajdah is complete, and that is the least (of the Sunnah amount).”

In sajdah, one should recite سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى thrice. Reciting the following duaas in sajdah in one’s nafl salaah is also established in the sunnah:

Duaa One:

أللهُمَّ أَعُوذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ، وَبِمُعَافَاتِكَ مِنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ لَا أُحْصِي ثَنَاءً عَلَيْكَ أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ

O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your displeasure, and in Your forgiveness from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in You (in Your mercy) from You (from Your punishment). I am unable to praise You as You ought to be praised. You are as You have praised Yourself.

عن عائشة، قالت: فقدت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ليلة من الفراش فالتمسته فوقعت يدي على بطن قدميه وهو في المسجد وهما منصوبتان وهو يقول: اللهم أعوذ برضاك من سخطك، وبمعافاتك من عقوبتك، وأعوذ بك منك لا أحصي ثناء عليك أنت كما أثنيت على نفسك (صحيح مسلم، الرقم: 486)

It is reported that Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu anha) said, “One night (when I awoke), I did not find Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) sleeping on the bed, so I began to search for him. Thereafter, my hand touched the bottom of his mubaarak feet while he was in the position of sajdah and his feet were upright. He was reciting the following dua (while in the position of sajdah):

أللهُمَّ أَعُوذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ، وَبِمُعَافَاتِكَ مِنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ لَا أُحْصِي ثَنَاءً عَلَيْكَ أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ

Duaa Two:

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ سَجَدْتُ، وَلَكَ أَسْلَمْتُ، وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ، سَجَدَ وَجْهِي لِلَّذِي خَلَقَهُ وَصَوَّرَهُ فَأَحْسَنَ صُورَتَهُ وَشَقَّ سَمْعَهُ وَبَصَرَهُ، تَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ

O Allah, for You alone do I make sajdah, for You alone do I submit, and in You alone do I believe. My face prostrates for the One who created it, fashioned it and beautified its form, and gave it hearing and sight. Exalted is Allah, the best of creators (i.e. those who fashion and make things).

عن علي، أن رسول صلى الله عليه وسلم كان إذا سجد يقول: اللهم لك سجدت، ولك أسلمت، وبك آمنت، سجد وجهي للذي خلقه وصوره فأحسن صورته وشق سمعه وبصره، تبارك الله أحسن الخالقين (سنن النسائي، الرقم: 1126)

Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) would recite the following dua in sajdah:

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ سَجَدْتُ، وَلَكَ أَسْلَمْتُ، وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ، سَجَدَ وَجْهِي لِلَّذِي خَلَقَهُ وَصَوَّرَهُ فَأَحْسَنَ صُورَتَهُ وَشَقَّ سَمْعَهُ وَبَصَرَهُ، تَبَارَكَ اللَّهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ

Duaa Three:

سُبُّوحٌ قُدُّوسٌ رَبُّ الْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالرُّوحِ

You are glorified, You are pure, You are the Rabb of the angels and the Rabb of Jibreel (alayhis salaam)

عن مطرف بن عبد الله بن الشخير، أن عائشة نبأته أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يقول في ركوعه وسجوده سبوح قدوس رب الملائكة والروح (صحيح مسلم، الرقم: 487)

Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu anha) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) would recite the following tasbeeh in his ruku and his sajdah:

سُبُّوحٌ قُدُّوسٌ رَبُّ الْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالرُّوحِ

Duaa Four:

اللهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي كُلَّهُ دِقَّهُ وَجِلَّهُ وَأَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ وَعَلَانِيَتَهُ وَسِرَّهُ

O Allah, forgive me for all my sins; minor and major sins, and the first and last sin (i.e. from the first till the last sin), and the sins which I committed openly and secretly.

عن أبي هريرة أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يقول في سجوده اللهم اغفر لي ذنبي كله دقه، وجله، وأوله وآخره وعلانيته وسره (صحيح مسلم، الرقم: 892)

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) would recite the following dua in his sajdah:

اللهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي كُلَّهُ دِقَّهُ وَجِلَّهُ وَأَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ وَعَلَانِيَتَهُ وَسِرَّهُ

Duaa Five:

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي مَا أَسْرَرْتُ وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ

O Allah, forgive me for the sins which I committed secretly and openly.

عن هلال بن يساف، قال: قالت عائشة رضي عنها: فقدت رسول صلى الله عليه وسلم من مضجعه فجعلت ألتمسه، وظننت أنه أتى بعض جواريه، فوقعت يدي عليه وهو ساجد وهو يقول: اللهم اغفر لي ما أسررت وما أعلنت (سنن النسائي، الرقم: 1124)

Hazrat Hilaal bin Yasaaf (rahimahullah) reports that Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu anha) said, “One night (when I awoke), I did not find Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) sleeping (besides me) on his bed, so I began to search for him (in the darkness of the room). I thought that he went to one of his slave women. Thereafter, my hand fell on him (and touched his feet) while he was in the position of sajdah. In sajdah, he was reciting the following dua:

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي مَا أَسْرَرْتُ وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ

Duaa Six:

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ فِي قَلْبِي نُورًا، وَاجْعَلْ فِي سَمْعِي نُورًا، وَاجْعَلْ فِي بَصَرِي نُورًا، وَاجْعَلْ مِنْ تَحْتِي نُورًا، وَاجْعَلْ مِنْ فَوْقِي نُورًا، وَعَنْ يَمِينِي نُورًا، وَعَنْ يَسَارِي نُورًا، وَاجْعَلْ أَمَامِي نُورًا، وَاجْعَلْ خَلْفِي نُورًا، وَأَعْظِمْ لِي نُورًا

O Allah! Instil in my heart noor, and instil in my hearing noor, and instil in my vision noor, and place below me noor, and place above me noor, and place on my right noor, and place on my left noor, and place before me noor, and place behind me noor, and grant me a great portion of noor.

عن ابن عباس قال كان (رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم) يقول في سجوده: اللهم اجعل في قلبي نورا واجعل في سمعي نورا واجعل في بصري نورا واجعل من تحتي نورا واجعل من فوقي نورا وعن يميني نورا وعن يساري نورا واجعل أمامي نورا واجعل خلفي نورا وأعظم لي نورا (صحيح مسلم، الرقم: 1121)

Hazrat ibnu Abbaas (radhiyallahu anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) would recite the following dua in his sajdah:

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ فِي قَلْبِي نُورًا، وَاجْعَلْ فِي سَمْعِي نُورًا، وَاجْعَلْ فِي بَصَرِي نُورًا، وَاجْعَلْ مِنْ تَحْتِي نُورًا، وَاجْعَلْ مِنْ فَوْقِي نُورًا، وَعَنْ يَمِينِي نُورًا، وَعَنْ يَسَارِي نُورًا، وَاجْعَلْ أَمَامِي نُورًا، وَاجْعَلْ خَلْفِي نُورًا، وَأَعْظِمْ لِي نُورًا

Duaa Seven:

رَبِّ أَعْطِ نَفْسِي تَقْوَاهَا زَكِّهَا أَنْتَ خَيْرُ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا، أَنْتَ وَلِيُّهَا وَمَوْلَاهَا

O my Rabb, bless my soul with taqwa (Your fear) and purify it (my soul), You are the Best Purifier. You are the Guardian and Master of it (my soul)

عن عائشة أنها فقدت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم من مضجعه، فلمسته بيدها، فوقعت عليه وهو ساجد، وهو يقول: رب أعط نفسي تقواها، زكها أنت خير من زكاها، أنت وليها ومولاها (مسند أحمد، الرقم: 25757)

It is reported regarding Hazrat Aaishah (radhiyallahu anha) that one night (when she awoke), she did not find Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) on his bed (sleeping besides her, so she began to search for him in the darkness of the room by moving her hand around). Thereafter, she touched him with her hand. When her hand touched him, (she found him) in the position of sajdah while reciting the following dua:

رَبِّ أَعْطِ نَفْسِي تَقْوَاهَا زَكِّهَا أَنْتَ خَيْرُ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا، أَنْتَ وَلِيُّهَا وَمَوْلَاهَا

Duaa Eight:

اللَّهُمَّ سَجَدَ لَكَ سَوَادِي وَخَيَالِي، وَبِكَ آمَنَ فُؤَادِي، أَبُوءُ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَهَذَا مَا جَنَيْتُ عَلَى نَفْسِي، يَا عَظِيمُ، يَا عَظِيمُ، اغْفِرْ لِي فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ الْعَظِيمَةَ إِلَّا الرَّبُّ الْعَظِيمُ

O Allah! My body and mind have prostrated to You alone, and my heart has brought Imaan in You alone. I fully acknowledge the favours You have bestowed upon me. Here before you are the sins which I have oppressed myself, O You Great Being, O You Great Being! Forgive me, for no one can forgive these great sins besides (You) the Great Lord.

عن عبد الله بن مسعود، رضي الله عنه قال كان (رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم) إذا سجد قال: اللهم سجد لك سوادي وخيالي، وبك آمن فؤادي، أبوء بنعمتك علي، وهذا ما جنيت على نفسي، يا عظيم، يا عظيم، اغفر لي فإنه لا يغفر الذنوب العظيمة إلا الرب العظيم (المستدرك للحاكم، الرقم: 1957)

اللَّهُمَّ سَجَدَ لَكَ سَوَادِي وَخَيَالِي، وَبِكَ آمَنَ فُؤَادِي، أَبُوءُ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَهَذَا مَا جَنَيْتُ عَلَى نَفْسِي، يَا عَظِيمُ، يَا عَظِيمُ، اغْفِرْ لِي فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ الْعَظِيمَةَ إِلَّا الرَّبُّ الْعَظِيمُ
