What Hazrat Anas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) Used to Do at the Time of a Storm – Fazaail A’maal – Taleem Series – Part Eleven

Hazrat Nadhr bin Abdillah relates:

One day, while Hazrat Anas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was alive, it became very dark during the day time. I went to him and asked, “Did you ever see such a thing transpire during the time of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)?”

He replied, “I seek refuge in Allah Ta‘ala! During the era of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), if the breeze grew a little stronger than normal, we would hasten towards the musjids, fearing the coming of the Last Day!”

Another Sahaabi, Hazrat Abu Dardaa (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), mentions, “Whenever there was a storm, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would become worried and go to the musjid.”

Nowadays, even at the time of the worst of problems, who thinks of going to the musjid? Leave aside the common people, even those who regard themselves as good and practising Muslims do not show importance to practising upon this sunnah.

What Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) Did at the Time of a Solar Eclipse (Sun being Blocked by the Moon)

Once, during the time of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), an eclipse of the sun occurred.

The Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) left their jobs. Even the young boys practising archery hastened towards the musjid to know what Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would do at that time.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) commenced performing two rakaats of Salaatul Kusoof (i.e. salaah at the time of solar eclipse), and these rakaats were so long that some people fainted and fell down.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) wept in his salaah and said, “O my Rabb! You have said that You will not punish them as long as I am with them, and so long as they seek Your forgiveness!”

This refers to a verse in the Qur’aan Majeed wherein Allah Ta‘ala says:

وَ مَا کَانَ اللّٰہُ  لِیُعَذِّبَہُمۡ  وَ اَنۡتَ فِیۡہِمۡ ؕ وَ مَا کَانَ اللّٰہُ مُعَذِّبَہُمۡ وَ ہُمۡ یَسۡتَغۡفِرُوۡنَ ﴿۳۳﴾

But Allah would not punish them while you (O Muhammed [sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam]) are with them, nor will He punish them while they seek forgiveness. (Surah Anfaal v. 33)

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then addressed the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) saying, “You should become concerned and hasten to perform salaah whenever you find the sun or the moon in eclipse. If you know the signs of the Last Day as I do, then surely you would weep more and laugh less. Whenever something like this transpires, then perform salaah, make dua to Allah Ta‘ala and give sadaqah (charity) to the poor.”
