The Importance of Discharging Zakaat Correctly

Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Ilyaas (rahimahullah) once said:

There are two matters which are of great concern to me, hence I feel that special attention should be shown to these two matters. The first is in regard to zikr. I am perceiving a deficiency of zikr among our jamaat brothers (i.e. those who are engaged in the effort of da’wah and tableegh). Hence, they should be encouraged to engage in zikr.

The second matter is that the wealthy class should be educated regarding the correct avenues of discharging their zakaat. Many a time, due to them not spending their zakaat in the correct avenues (i.e. upon the deserving recipients), their zakaat is destroyed (i.e. due to them not discharging to the correct recipients, the desired reward is not acquired, though the obligation is discharged).

I have written the names of forty such people who are not desirous for wealth (though they are eligible for receiving zakaat). If zakaat is given to them, then the wealth will not affect their hearts (due to their piety). These people have placed their tawakkul (trust and reliance) only upon Allah Ta‘ala, and constantly remain engaged in the work of da’wah and tableegh. Hence, it is extremely important to assist these people (as they are eligible to receive zakaat).

The wealthy class should search for such people to give their zakaat, and they should look at each person’s need (and accordingly assist them with zakaat). Those who give zakaat to people who have made it their profession to ask people for zakaat, or they advertise for zakaat via pamphlets and flyers, or they make chandah (zakaat collection), then at times, the zakaat given does not reach the correct recipients (as the people asking for zakaat donations are not eligible to receive zakaat, or the organizations do not discharge the zakaat to the deserving recipients according to the Shari’ah).
