Duaas at the end of a gathering

At the end of a gathering, one should recite the following:

Duaa One:

 سُبْحَانَكَ اللّٰهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَّا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوْبُ إِلَيْكَ

Glory be to You, O Allah Ta‘ala, with all Your praise! I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except You, I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.

عن أبي برزة الأسلمي، قال: كان رسول الله-صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول بأخرة إذا أراد أن يقوم من المجلس: سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك، أشهد أن لا إله إلا أنت، أستغفرك وأتوب إليك فقال رجل: يا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إنك لتقول قولا ما كنت تقوله فيما مضى، فقال: كفارة لما يكون في المجلس (سنن أبي داود، الرقم: 4861)

Hazrat Abu Barzah (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that it was the habit of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) to recite the following dua at the end of a gathering whenever he intended to stand up to leave the gathering. One of the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu anhum) enquired, “O Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), (we notice that) you recite a dua at the end of the gathering which you would not recite previously.”  Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “I recite this dua at the end of a gathering so that it may serve as an atonement for that (futile speech, etc.) which had occurred during the gathering.”

 سُبْحَانَكَ اللّٰهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَّا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوْبُ إِلَيْكَ

Duaa Two:

سُبْحَانَ اللهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ سُبْحَانَكَ اللّٰهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَّا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوْبُ إِلَيْكَ

Glory be to Allah Ta‘ala, with all His praises! Glory be to You, O Allah Ta‘ala, with all Your praise! I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except You, I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.

عن جبير بن مطعم قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: من قال: سبحان الله وبحمده سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك أشهد أن لا إله إلا أنت أستغفرك وأتوب إليك، فقالها في مجلس ذكر كان الطابع يطبع عليه، ومن قالها في مجلس لغو كان كفارة له. قال في مجمع الزوائد، الرقم: 17165: رواه الطبراني، ورجاله رجال الصحيح (المعجم الكبير للطبراني، الرقم: 1586)

Hazrat Jubayr bin Mut’im (radhiyallahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “The one who recites the following dua at the end of a majlis (gathering) of zikr, it will be a seal upon it (i.e. it will be a seal upon the good that takes place in the gathering), and whoever recites it in a gathering wherein futile speech took place, it will be a means of atonement for it:

 سُبْحَانَ اللهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ سُبْحَانَكَ اللّٰهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَّا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوْبُ إِلَيْكَ

Duaa Three:

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ عَمِلْتُ سُوءًا وَظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Glory be to You, O Allah Ta‘ala, with all Your praise! I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except You, I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance. I have committed evil and I have oppressed myself (through committing sins), so forgive me as no one can forgive sins besides You.

عن رافع بن خديج ، قال: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا اجتمع إليه أصحابه فأراد أن ينهض قال: سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك ، أشهد أن لا إله إلا أنت ، أستغفرك وأتوب إليك ، عملت سوءا ، وظلمت نفسي ، فاغفر لي ، فإنه لا يغفر الذنوب إلا أنت فقلنا: يا رسول الله هذه كلمات أحدثتهن قال: أجل جاءني جبريل ، فقال لي: يا محمد ، هن كفارة المجالس (المستدرك على الصحيحين للحاكم، الرقم: 2024)

Hazrat Raafi bin Khadeej (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would recite the following dua when he intended standing up from a gathering wherein the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) were present with him.

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ عَمِلْتُ سُوءًا وَظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Hazrat Raafi bin Khadeej (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) further says, “We asked Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), ‘O Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! You have mentioned these words (which you did not mention previously).’ Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, ‘Yes, Hazrat Jibreel (alaihis salaam) came to me and said that these words are an atonement for (the futile speech, etc. which may have occurred during) the gathering.’”
