Duaas at the time of Calamities

Duaa One:

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ اللهُمَّ أْجُرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي، وَأَخْلِفْ لِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا

To Allah do we belong, and to Him shall we return. O Allah, reward me in my calamity and grant me something better in place of what I have lost.

عن أم سلمة، زوج النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، تقول: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، يقول: ما من عبد تصيبه مصيبة، فيقول: إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون، اللهم أجرني في مصيبتي، وأخلف لي خيرا منها، إلا أجره الله في مصيبته، وأخلف له خيرا منها ، قالت: فلما توفي أبو سلمة، قلت كما أمرني رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فأخلف الله لي خيرا منه، رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. (صحيح مسلم، الرقم: 918)

Hazrat Ummu Salamah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), the respected wife of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Whenever a calamity befalls a Muslim and he then recites the following dua, Allah Ta‘ala will reward him and bless him with something better than what he had lost.”

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ اللهُمَّ أْجُرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي، وَأَخْلِفْ لِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا

Hazrat Ummu Salamah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) further says, “When Abu Salamah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) passed away, I recited the above-mentioned dua according to the instruction of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Allah Ta‘ala then granted me someone better than him, (Allah Ta‘ala granted me) Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) (as a husband).”

Duaa Two:

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ، اللَّهُمَّ عِنْدَكَ أَحْتَسِبُ مُصِيبَتِي فَأْجُرْنِي فِيهَا وَأَبْدِلْنِي مِنْهَا خَيْرًا

To Allah do we belong, and to Him shall we return. O Allah, from You alone do I hope for reward in my calamity, thus reward me in it and replace me with something that is better than (what I have lost through) it.

عن أبي سلمة، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال: إذا أصاب أحدكم مصيبة فليقل: إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون، اللهم عندك أحتسب مصيبتي فأجرني فيها وأبدلني منها خيرا (سنن الترمذي، الرقم: 3511)

Hazrat Abu Salamah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “When a calamity befalls anyone of you, then he should recite the following dua:

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ، اللَّهُمَّ عِنْدَكَ أَحْتَسِبُ مُصِيبَتِي فَأْجُرْنِي فِيهَا وَأَبْدِلْنِي مِنْهَا خَيْرًا
